A Vault That Logs Everything

One place, written as it happens

I used to have context spread over a dozen folders. Now there is one Obsidian vault on the PC. A rule in my global Claude config says that before any session finishes a turn that changed something, it appends to that day's note: what changed, why, how it was verified, what was not, and how to roll it back, plus any decision I made.

Homelab changes also get their own changelog page. Secrets are never written to the vault. A note names the file that holds a secret instead.

Syncthing, two ways, and one trap

The vault syncs both ways with a folder on the TrueNAS box, which is backed up. The trap is that several sessions write to the same daily note at once. Syncthing then saves the loser as a
.sync-conflict-
file, and a whole laptop session can quietly disappear from the main note.

I found exactly that while auditing: seven sections from the laptop were only in conflict files. The fix is to merge and compare the sections, not to trust the file names. Sessions now read the note first and only append their own section.
