THE STORY
Took three attempts to get this working. First try was Pi-hole failed because I didn't realize I needed a second NIC. Second try switched to OpenWRT same issue. Third time I finally got the USB NIC and it worked after about an hour of troubleshooting.
Then I got a call saying the WiFi was down. Turns out the router would just stop routing after a while for no obvious reason. A reboot fixed it, so now it auto-restarts if it can't ping an AP on the network.
Xfinity router is mostly gone. Good enough.
